February update!
Hello my little junior bacon cheeseburger! Wow, a lot has happened since you turned eight years old! Pumba is gone. He passed away a few weeks ago. It's still weird to think that he is gone, and we feel bad that he wasn't more a part of your life. RIP Pumba!
I'm glad we still have Big Guy. Boy, Micah loves him, but I think you're growing to love him more too. You've been holding him more lately, well- as much as he'll let anyone hold him! He likes to be around us more than on us.
You have been BFFs with Alyssa all school year, but after Lily's friend Livi moved away, you've been saying you think Lily is your new BFF. This is surprising to me, since you had even asked if you could take Alyssa to the prom when you were in high school! But hey, things change, as you know. It's a weird balance to write about you now, while you're an innocent 8 year old, and writing to you knowing you'll be (hopefully) reading this as an adult, or at least a teenager. Anyway, I love seeing you strengthen your existing friendships and developing new ones at the same time. You'd be a good friend to have. I love that when I tell you how shy I was as an eight year old, you always say you wish you could go back and time and be my friend. That is so sweet, and so YOU.
Speaking of your friends, Cara's dad recently passed away, between your birthday party and me writing this. It's a hard thing to really understand, and I don't think you quite grasp how much this is affecting your friend. It's my honor to help you figure things out, both big and small. I hope so much that I am doing a good job. I feel so badly for her, and for the complications she will have dealing with it at such a young age. Her dad was exactly my age- in your words "not 41, but 42!". I'm so thankful that I get to spend more time with you than Cara got to spend with her dad.
What else is new? Well, you're going to have a new baby girl cousin! Uncle Nathan and Aunt Bethany are expecting their first child this year. That's exciting! Hopefully you will spend a lot of time with her (we don't know her name yet).
It's a little thing, but you're loving it- Grandma and PawPaw gave you one of their old bookshelves, and since it's now where your TV was, mommy moved your TV to the dresser beside your bed. Now you can watch DVDs from your bed! That's pretty cool. I'd have loved that when I was your age!!
Well, I can't think of too much else that is new right now, so I'll wrap this up.
Love you, beautiful girl!!

Eight years old?!?!
How did this happen??? I'm sitting here on my lunch break at work, reflecting on the fact that I have an 8 year old daughter, and it's so hard to believe. It's funny, because when you were born, I couldn't imagine what you'd be like at 8. When you were a toddler, I tried to cherish the moments we had, because I knew you'd quickly be growing up, and I wanted to enjoy your innocence and the pure joy you exuded on a daily basis. I wasn't afraid, but I felt like it wouldn't quite last as you transitioned into school and learned more about the world.
I'm so happy to say that I was wrong. You still exude pure joy in your life, no matter what is going on in the world around us. You've learned more in your 8 years than I did when I was your age, yet you retain your innocence and infectiously positive outlook on life. I admire that more than you know.
I'm so proud of you for so many reasons. I couldn't let your birthday pass without documenting just a fraction of my love for you here. Thank you for being such an amazing blessing to me, Natalie. You've softened my heart. You've made me feel more joy than I ever thought possible. You mean the world to me, my little junior bacon double cheeseburger. :) I love you more than I can begin to say.
Happy birthday, my sweet Natalie!
Love always and forever,
Dadddy

Your big heart
Yeah yeah, all I do is gush about you, Natalie, but you know what? You deserve it! We are so proud of your giving heart. Oh, you want examples? Good! 'Cause I've got them! First, you wrote a letter to your friend, Sophie. Unprovoked and purely out of a want to express your appreciation to your friend. How sweet is that??
Then, you participated in your school's Jump Rope For Heart money drive and dedicated it to Grandma near the anniversary of her heart attack. You genuinely were excited to make money for a charitable organization that would help others. Big heart. Again.
Oh, you want another example? Sure! On a page of your homework centered around a hundred dollar bill (how many nickels in $100, etc), one of the questions was "What would you do if you had $100?". Your answer? "I'd donate it, and keep some". What other seven year old would think to donate that money? I'm sure there are others, but that's the exception to the rule. And you, my darling, are exceptional. I love you and your awesome heart!!

Melt my heart
First of all, I'm sorry it's been so long since I updated your blog! The good news is that we've been having fun together in the months between now and then!
I just wanted to let you know how much you touched me and melted my heart yesterday. When I was helping you get ready for bed last night, out of nowhere you said "You're a good dad". And you said it with such sweetness and earnestness. I said "aww, why did you say that?". You said "I don't know. You just are."
Well, my heart is melted once again by your sweet sentiments.
I'm so proud of the big girl you are. I called you a little girl last week and you corrected me that you're a big girl. That is true. As hard as it is for me to let go of my "little girl", I fully embrace the awesome moments I am (and will be) sharing with my big girl.
I told you the other day that there's nothing you can't do if you try. This is 100% true. I know many parents say that to their child as a form of hollow encouragement, but I genuinely believe what I said. You are a brilliant young lady with many talents and an amazing work ethic. The fact that you are excelling at a gifted school in your first year at Iles is just one piece of proof.
I love you with all of my heart, Natalie. Thank you for being you.

Reading With Mommy
I love how much you enjoy reading, mostly with Mommy (good choice, since she reads a lot faster than Daddy). Whether it's your new Bible or Dear Dumb Diary, I love that you love reading.
